Tortola, A Glorious Port-of-Call to Visit on a Cruise Ship

First, let me describe our entry into Roadtown. What a beautiful hour or so....the hour we spent coming into Roadtown. We came into Tortola late morning so the Holland America Westerdam passengers all got to enjoy the entry rather than sleeping through it like we often do when on a cruise ship. We passed through a narrow channel between St John, USVI and several small, lush green islands, Great Thatch and Little Thatch to name a couple...how beautiful! We were boarded by a local ship Captain, all while in motion. He then guided the ship past Roadtown so we could pivot into a channel deep enough for the ship to pass through. Again, we were struck by the beauty of our surroundings....many small lush islands all around us with a few sail boats thrown in for good measure. It didn't seem as though our large, 1800 passenger ship should be there. The cruise ship pier was completed in 1999. The pier at Wickham Cay is right in the city of Roadtown so you don't need a taxi to get to the shopping areas although they are readily available if you want to do some sightseeing on your own.

We had about an hour and a half before our eagerly awaited shore excursion....our snorkeling adventure to Norman Island. In that time, we disembarked and decided to walk into the town. Directly outside the entrance to the pier, there is a shopping area of tarp covered booths. We passed these and were happy to find the shop keepers to be pretty passive (unlike a few ports of call where the shop keepers aggressive style can be intimidating to many even though they are harmless). We went into the main part of town (Americans be careful crossing streets, they drive on the left side of the road here) and enjoyed a quick visit to the Sunny Caribbee Spice Shop Co & Art Gallery. Around the corner, not far from the ferry dock in the Craft Alive Market, we visited a neat little shop called The Coral Studio. They sell some lovely and affordable handcrafted coral carvings made from dead coral harvested from the local shores. This is where I found a gift for my mother-in-law who was so nice to take care of the kids while we were enjoying this cruise vacation! We would have to shop more later as it was time to head back to the pier to catch the open-air bus that would take us to the boat we were going to Norman Island on. On our way back to the pier, we noticed a couple local restaurants/bars right outside the port entrance. They were crowded with cruise passengers enjoying the front decks.

My husband and I had been eager to visit Tortola as we had planned to return to Norman Island where we snorkeled together about 16 years ago during a visit to St Thomas. When we last visited Norman Island, we had rented a small boat from the northeast shores of St Thomas. We spent a fantastic day chartering a course to Norman Island for our first ever snorkeling adventure. (We don't recommend this for new boaters like ourselves....we were young and adventurous, actually foolish. Stick with a group excursion with an experienced charter operator). Anyway, this was our first opportunity to return to Norman Island. We were a bit concerned it might not be as good as we remembered, especially since this time around we were booked with a group rather than visiting on our own. After a half hour boat ride past some other small islands, Peter Island and Pelican Island, we arrived at Norman Island, also known as "Treasure Island" as it was the model for Robert Louis Stevenson's epic novel, Treasure Island. This island is also well known for its pirate history. It is uninhabited at this time but after the pirates, cattle farmers tried to operate from here. They found it difficult to operate from the island and left it deserted many years ago. I can understand as there is not much flat land here. With its marine caves, it is very popular with snorkelers now. We found it to be as wonderful as we had remembered.....brightly colored fish, coral, cool caves to snorkel into and peace. There are no waves, there was one other boat when we arrived but we never felt crowded. What a treat. I can't wait to go back again one day! Maybe before I go back, I will take a scuba class ...although not really necessary as it is no more than 20 -30 feet deep around the base of the island and in most places, only 3-8 feet. It would be nice to study up a little on the marine life I saw so I can identify it by name. "Pretty" is the best word I have for everything now.

We were tired when we got back from our excursion but I managed to get a little more shopping in. Then, back to the ship for a warm shower, a little relaxation on our balcony and off to dinner for another delicious meal and inviting company. Guests we dined with that evening had visited The Baths on Virgin Gorda, the second most populous island of the BVIs. They said it was a gorgeous natural stretch of coastline with large boulders strewn about. The boulders are said to have come from a prehistoric volcano. They enjoyed a day of snorkeling and swimming in the pools and grottoes formed by the great rocks. Maybe we will have to visit there next time but it will be hard to decide between The Baths and anther visit to Norman Island. What a day!!!! Onboard the Holland America Westerdam - My Recent Cruise

My husband and I just cruised with Holland America on the Westerdam. First, let me tell you this ship is has been very popular with my clients, I am a travel agent that specializes in cruises. Last spring, I had a client that sailed in the Caribbean on the Westerdam. She loved it so much, she turned right around and booked it for an Alaskan cruise. She loved it just as much the second time. Now, me myself, I typically like to try a different ship each time I cruise. But I have to tell you, I would definitely cruise on the Westerdam again.

What a beautiful ship. The Holland America Westerdam is 4 years old but nearly spotless. Her decor is beautiful...I loved the crystal ship model rotating in the chandelier of the Atrium, right across from the Pinnacle Grill. Our room was a typical balcony stateroom but it was very well appointed compared to some of the other ships we have sailed on. There was plenty of storage space for all the clothes and gear we brought. We appreciated the full bathtub rather than just a shower! We also got a look at the suites onboard this ship. They were very nice. I loved the large seating areas, enormous bathrooms (for a cruise ship) with double sinks and the spacious balconies.

What did we enjoy onboard? Well, let me name a few things.....first and foremost we enjoyed the before/after dinner melodies of the string trio, the Moonlight Strings. They played, in the Explorer's Lounge, each evening from about 6:30-11:00. This trio from Hungary played classics, recent music and even a little Disney music when a child was in the lounge. The music was enjoyable and the lounge chairs were very cozy so we were never in a hurry to leave. It was a great place to relax with an after dinner drink. They were great!

We also really enjoyed the pool areas. The Lido pool has a wonderful sliding dome cover so regardless of the weather, it is good swimming/relaxing weather anytime. Also, the two pools onboard were larger than most we have seen on cruise ships.

We found ourselves in the Queen's Lounge and Culinary Arts Center frequently. The most enjoyable event here was the Culinary Art's event "Chef Andreas Turns Up the Heat". We had fun watching Chef Brad (the Pinnacle Grill Chef was called in when his boss got pulled into a meeting), cook a Mediterranean Chicken dinner & Austrian Apple Strudel. The setup was great.....the kitchen is setup like Emeril's and there are a couple large screens with live shots looking directly down at the counter and stove top so you have a good view of everything the chef is doing. Chef Brad was entertaining and in the end, he shared samples of the Strudel with everyone in the audience. We also got to bring home the recipe cards! I can't wait to try the Mediterranean Chicken dish although I am not so sure about trying to tackle the Strudel. That looks like a little more work than I am willing to do. Also in the Queen's Lounge, there were daily movies, all recent! One evening, we watched a very funny Westerdam Superstar contest of karaoke singers...some very bad an some surprisingly good. The room was packed, standing room only, and we laughed hysterically at times.

And the library....also very different than most of the other ships I have been on. The Exploration's Cafe is combined with the Crow's Nest Lounge forward on deck 10 of the Westerdam. This library was wonderful.....it was large, well organized and had a great selection. It also included the internet access area. The coffee bar was great and the views were wonderful! One morning, even though we had a great balcony to sit on back at our room, my husband and I sat in some very comfortable lounge chairs basking in the warm sun from the large windows, and relaxing with a good book. We really appreciated the down time.

Oh, and did I mention the Pinnacle Grill....scrumptious! The wait staff was attentive while not overbearing, the ambience was very nice.....be sure to ask for the corner table if you want the perfect romantic spot! The food......yum. I enjoyed a delicious fillet mignon and prawns. Dessert was to die for....chocolate souffle. I want this every night! Although there is a small surcharge for a meal here, I encourage everyone to try the Pinnacle Grill. Be sure to book quickly as the reservations fill up within the first day or two.

There were so many more things to do, I couldn't even get to everything but let me just mention a few more.....the Piano bar is rocking every night with lots of fun music and many happy guests! It tends to be standing room only later in the evening. Of course the Westerdam also has a beautiful spa featuring all the current health and relaxation opportunities available in the spas at home.....even a hydro therapy pool. And, if your husband feels like he is going to miss his sports, there is a nice sports bar near the casino. When we were onboard, the Phillies were playing the Rays in the first couple games of the World Series. In the Vista lounge, the shows were fun and what I enjoyed most was seeing one of my clients end up on the shoulders of a unicyclist. And I always thought the people that were pulled from the audience for things that dramatic were plants. Not this time! Now I know. Oh my goodness, just glad my husband didn't volunteer me!

First Time Cruise With Kids

Cruising industry has been on a steady rise in a recent decade. There are many cruising companies catering to all segments of our population from very wealthy to the average families. I have personally taken a cruise with kids, and once I did, I have realized why cruising with kids works.

Cruise prices can add up but many times 3rd and 4th guest in the same room is charged only half price of the original fare. The 3rd and 4th member of your family will be sleeping on a pull out bed in the ship cabin, and this increases children sense of adventure and fun. If you are on a budget, you may want to get an inside cabin that has no windows or portholes. The advertised fares usually represent the inside cabin charges and upgrades to the cabin types are extra. In my personal opinion the inside room is sufficient and comfortable enough.

What to expect?

When you come on board you'll be greeted by the vessel staff and shown the way to your cabin. Cabins on most ships are pretty small, so pack lightly. Soon after you settle in your room, you will hear an announcement to report to a certain location and go through the safety drill. This is a little nuisance of cruising but very important. You will learn where to find your life west, and where to report in an event of evacuation. This drill is not only important for everyone safety but also educational for children. Soon thereafter the vessel will leave the port and kick off the sailing with music and drinks. Everyone is in a good mood because, well, the cruise has just started.

The meals on the cruise are all inclusive. You and your children will have access to buffets with variety of foods and this is especially important for those picky eaters that only eat macaroni and pizza. The buffet contains different cuisines, drinks and desserts. It is a real bonanza and feast for both your stomachs and eyes. In addition if you have a male teenager like I do, you will probably save money because those kids can eat a ton. I am under the consistent impression that the cruise company actually loses money on my teenager because of all the food he eats. Some cruise lines have a relaxed attitude toward dining which means that you go and eat whenever you feel like it. Others do have formal dining dinners where you are actually scheduled to arrive at the certain time. The formal dining will include the appetizers, main dish, drinks, coffee, tea and desserts. Dinner is the best and most expensive meal you will eat, so you may want to save some space during the day. My tactic was to eat less during the day in anticipation of a fancy dinner.

Dressing code is casual for the most part, and shorts and T-shirt will work. Some cruise lines have formal nights that require formal attire: suits and ties, elegant dresses. The dress code also applies to children so make sure they have the clothes required to go to dinners during those formal nights. If you or your children don't meet the minimum formal nights requirements, you'll have to eat your dinner at a buffet instead in the main dinner hall. Please check with the cruise line regarding the dress code before you go.

The ships have tons of amenities. My favorite pastime on cruises is just lounging by the pool and staring at the great big ocean around. Kids running up and down the halls or neighbors that have had one too many to drink, can disturb your sleep. * 2. Snorkel If you are taking a cruise to tropical waters, there is a good chance that snorkeling is on your itinerary. Snorkeling tours usually have swim fins, swim mask, and a snorkel included free of charge on your excursion. You need to think though - how many mouths have been on that snorkel?

Western Caribbean Cruise

We were on the Radiance of the Seas for the western Caribbean cruise on November 28/04. This was our second cruise with Royal Caribbean with our first last year on the larger Adventure of the Seas. After one cruise with RCI, I expected roughly the same standards with the Radiance and in general, I wasn't disappointed.

Staterooms:

Our stateroom was an inside aft cabin and we were not disappointed. It was roomy enough and the lighting was adequate. Closet space and drawers were also sufficient for our use. We noticed that the double beds here were actually a bit better than the one we had on the Adventure since we couldn't really feel the split between the two separate beds like we did last time. If there's one thing that can be improved is the shower curtain. The one installed was not adequate in keeping in all the water from the shower. The shower on the Adventure utilized a double glass door system which was far superior. Otherwise, the cabin was nice and dark for sleeping at night. Although we heard a little noise from the cabins next to us, it was minimal. We didn't miss having any window or balcony at all since we were hardly ever in our stateroom. We were either at port or elsewhere on the ship and went back to our cabins just to relax or sleep. We would definitely book an inside cabin again with RCI unless we had a free upgrade.

Dining:

The main Cascades dining room was nice and meals were good. Breakfasts had the same menu every morning. Lunch at the dining room was okay. The dinners were good but not every meal item was a winner. There was the odd appetizer and dessert that was not up to par. One thing that my partner noticed was that the portions of the main courses seemed to be smaller than those served on the Adventure. We usually went upstairs to the Windjammer to get more food after dining at the Cascades. In some parts of the Cascades room, the tables were placed too cramp so walking to out own table was tricky at times. The self serve Windjammer was good. It usually had more variety of food than served downstairs at the Cascades. Breakfast and lunch were busy at the Windjammer but during evenings, most people chose to dine at the Cascades. The two other optional restaurants onboard Portafino and Choppe House were available at $20 US per person but we never tried them since the meals already included at the Cascades and Windjammer were fine by us. Other passengers who did go to these optional rooms told us that they were nothing special. There was another cafe available during late evenings called the Seaview and they provided fare such as sandwiches, salads and burgers. This was a nice feature. One thing we did object to was that they charged for the coffee and tea there. There was also a specialty coffee place on the main centrum of the ship and they also charged. We had more availability of free beverages on the Adventure.

Service:

The service by the stateroom attendants and dining room staff was top notch as expected.

Entertainment:

The evening shows at the Aurora Theatre were a mix of the ship's own crew of dancers and singers plus some outside comics and singers. In general, the shows were quite good. We would have liked them to mix up the entertainment each night rather than allocate music, comedy and magic into different evenings. Rather than an entire show of magic, we would have preferred each night featuring a variety of entertainment. Live music around the ship was a nice added touch.

Amenities:

Although smaller than the Adventure, the Radiance had fine amenities including the gym/spa, mini golf, pools and the shops. There was internet access but at 50 cents per minute, the service is a bit steep. There were things to do during the days at sea such as art auctions, cooking demos and dance classes. However, we felt that there was more offered on the Adventure. As for embarking and disembarking, there was no problem on the Radiance. The 6th level contained the casino and for non-smokers, this was a problem. The ventilation in the casino was not great and as a result, cigarette smoke travelled to adjacent areas near the casino. My partner wanted to avoid going on the 6th level whenever possible.

In summary, we enjoyed our cruise on the Radiance of the Seas. However, comparing it to the larger Adventure of the Seas, we would rate the larger ship a bit higher. We liked the huge promenade on the Adventure which was not available on a smaller ship like the Radiance. Given a choice in the future, we would opt for the larger ship. For first time cruisers, the Radiance would still be a good ship to vacation on. This is simply the case of where veteran cruisers would expect more especially if they have been on higher end ships.

One of the most popular and more trafficked ports of call for cruise ships is St. Thomas U.S.V.I. Known for having "Something for everyone", St. Thomas also serves as a port of call to many ships sailing the southern Caribbean, South America and the Panama Canal.

Upon your arrival to this wonderful island you will more than likely be docked at Havensight or Crown Bay, the two primary docks for cruise ships. Havensight dock is well equipped with AtM's, a post office, public phones, and the only book store on the island, a wine shop and more than 50 stores for your shopping pleasure. Across from the Havensight dock you will find coffee shops and internet café's and more stores for shopping. Charlotte Amalie is an easy walk from the docks for even more duty free shopping. St. Thomas is not the bargain paradise it used to be. So do some comparisons shopping before you buy. The one good thing is that St. Thomas is an American port and the duty free allowance is now $1,600.00, and that's twice the amount allowed for Europe. There are however many great bargains still to be found.

Take note that if your ships docks on a Sunday, many of the stores and shops of Charlotte Amalie are only open from 9 A.M. to 1 P.M. and many of the attractions observe the same hours and only a few restaurants are open for lunch. If however you are fortunate enough to have a day to spend on this beautiful island, try spending it exploring the historic districts or dining at one of the extraordinary restaurants located in Frenchtown. When getting around in St. Thomas, remember that individual cabs are a rarity, cabs are usually safari trucks or vans and charge a flat fee if they are headed "your way". The Oasis will be the largest ship on the ocean - boasting a passenger capacity of 5,400 at double capacity with 2,700 staterooms. It's important to select a group cruise that will fit everyone's budget. On a larger ship, there is generally a wide range of stateroom categories in a variety of different price ranges. It's likely that everyone will find something they can afford - whether it be an interior stateroom, an oceanview, a balcony, or a suite. However, the Oasis of the Seas takes the typical stateroom choices and turbocharges them. The Promenade Deck is also a really great place to hang out informally with people at the coffee shop, ice cream shop, or any of the lounges or restaurants. A new addition to the Promenade Deck is the Rising Tide Bar - a high-tech water feature where the bar rises up on a plume of water from the Promenade Deck to Central Park (three stories up). Additionally, embarkation for this ship will take place at the Promenade Deck rather than on one of the lower decks (as has been with the other RCC ships).

3. AQUATHEATER

In addition to the standard entertainment fare (theater, movies, casino, etc.), Oasis has the coolest outdoor amphitheater ever called the AquaTheater. By day, the large pool (51' x 21') can be utilized by guests. With a depth of 17 feet deep and filled with fresh water, this is much different than the typical cruise ship pool. At night, the area transforms into an outdoor theater with a water and light show. Trapeze artists take to the heights and artistic swimmers fill the pool. Cameras have been installed under the water and the images are projected on large screens on each side of the pool. I'm not sure how groups could utilize this space, but it was too cool not to mention it.

4. CHOICES, CHOICES AND MORE CHOICES

The key to successful cruise group travel is choices. You want to have choices for stateroom accommodations so everyone can find something within their budget. You need choices for dining - so finicky eaters will be happy, as well as accommodating those with restricted diets (such as diabetics or those with food allergies). With a group cruise, you'll be hard pressed to find a single activity that everyone will agree on, so the more choices there are, the more likely it will be that everyone will find something fun to do.

CONCLUSION

The Oasis of the Seas provides so many choices for so many things that cruise group travel was an obvious consideration Royal Caribbean had in mind when they designed this ship. My Wife is at it Again - This Time a Cruise to Acapulco

It started out as a simple week long cruise to Alaska. My wife and I are avid cruisers...well my wife is and she drags me along. It may appear as though I am enjoying myself, but really I just want to get back to work. My wife lets me work pretty much all the time, so I want her to enjoy the cruise. For her to enjoy the cruise she has to think I am having fun too, so that's why I pretend to enjoy myself.

Anyway, back to the Alaskan cruise...some people we met on a cruise were going to go, and so we were going to go along as well. It's always fun to cruise with people you've met before...assuming you like them of course. A couple of cruises back we went on a cruise to the Caribbean where a large number of people had been yakking at each other on the Cruise Critics message board for almost a year. People all going on the Caribbean cruise of course. It turned out to be a fantastic cruise. We had so much fun with this huge group of people. We referred to it as 62 best friends meeting for the first time. We had some group party's and a couple of blow-up dolls as mascots and we even had a Pirate theme. It made the whole cruise far more fun. Well for Kathy it was a lot of fun, I was just pretending of course. There are a lot of pictures of the cruise, the group, and even the mascots at my cruisesrfun website.

But I digress...back to the Alaskan cruise. Well, it turned out that a whole bunch of those folks that went on that Caribbean cruise decided to do another cruise together, this time to Acapulco Mexico. The next thing I knew our Alaskan cruise had become our Acapulco cruise. I much prefer hot weather to warm and warm to cold, so I had not been looking forward to the Alaskan cruise, but a cruise to sunny Mexico would be another story. Er uh at least it would be easier to pretend to enjoy the cruise.

One of the nifty things about this cruise is it stops at Zihuatanejo, which is where my step son and his wife got married on the beach. Actually, the beach was called La Playa Ropa, and the wedding was at a restaurant called La Perla. Well...we thought why not invite our son and his wife and his sister and her husband to go along too. They are great fun and our son's wife is Mexican and speaks fluent Spanish...it makes her very handy when in Mexico.

This cruise to Acapulco is at the end of October. We will be on the ship for Halloween. You know what that means. It means that there will be a mandatory costume party. At least it will be mandatory for anyone married to my wife. Jeeze. UPS has been making stops at my house several times a week lately bringing things like big fancy ear rings and costumes, and dresses...lots of dresses. My wife Kathy really likes to dress up on these cruises. I pretend I don't mind donning my tuxedo a couple of times each cruise. Apparently I will also be getting dressed up as a Mexican Bandito...with bandoliers holding shot glasses instead of bullets, and holsters that hold tequila bottles. Kathy is going to go as "Miss Piggy" dressed as "Big Bird". Doesn't make sense to me either, but check out our website in early November to see for yourself.

This cruise is aboard the Carnival Spirit, and we have never cruised on Carnival. The last cruise I was on was aboard the HAL Oosterdam, a ship we've traveled on twice. On that cruise I had my iphone, and I could check my email and visit my favorite websites from almost anywhere on the ship. I hope that's the case with the Spirit. As usual I will do a cruise review and post it on cruisesrfun.

Kathy has been in near constant communication with one of that group of 64, Judy, who happens to be a Travel agent. So now we've been moved around, up graded and God knows what else, but we apparently have the perfect state room...with a wrap-around balcony and plenty of room for that cocktail party. On this cruise our group will be around 20 people, and I know Kathy and two of her friends are planning at least one cocktail party for the entire group. A lot of the original group of 64 still chat on the boards, and of course this upcoming cruise has a message board at cruise critics site, and there is daily chatting. I never get involved in that stuff; I leave it all to Kathy.

The cruise begins in San Diego, and we will be staying overnight in the same hotel as the last time we cruised. Kathy has booked us a room where we can stand on the balcony and watch the ship dock early in the morning. Last time it was at like 5:00 a.m. or something...I don't really understand the attraction., but I am pretty sure that at some un-Godly hour I'll be up watch the ship pull up to the dock.

We usually build web pages about our cruise as we go, and upload them to the CruisesRfun website from the ship. This time we will be doing the same thing. I have a new digital camera that takes nice movies, and I would really like to begin incorporating videos into my website. If we can upload at a reasonable speed I'll certainly have some cool videos posted on the site before the end of the cruise. If I am really lucky I'll be able to get some really embarrassing footage of my children for all of their friends to view.

On this trip at least, what happens in Mexico will definitely NOT stay in Mexico. Vive la Internet!
